The Icelandic district commissioners (sýslumenn) handle several types of public services, including civil marriages and divorces, custody, paternity, child maintenance and adoptions. The Icelandic district commissioners issue various permits such as criminal records and driver's licenses. Although it is Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá Íslands) that issues Icelandic passports one can apply for a passport in the office of the district commissioner.
